LOS GATOS, CA – Online streaming service Netflix announced today that it would pick up television series Wings for a ninth and final season.
The NBC sitcom, which last aired during the 1996-97 season, ran for eight seasons and 172 episodes. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos explained the decision in a press release stating that he had recently caught up on the series via the Netflix app on his new smart TV. “I missed it the first time around on NBC,” he stated. “I was really more of a Seinfeld guy.”
Sarandos went on to state that he felt the eighth season – and current series finale – left room for more. “We’ve done this before with Arrested Development and The Killing, so naturally I wanted to see where else Wings could fly us… Pun intended.”
When reached for comment, actor Tony Shalhoub replied that he would “definitely be up to step back into [character Antonio] Scarpacci’s shoes again.” He believed his co-star Tim Daly would also be up for the reprisal, if he’s still around. “I haven’t seen him in a few years. I hope he’s doing well,” said Shalhoub.
Season nine of Wings is slated to begin production in January and be released all at once some time in the fall. Sarandos added, “I really just want to reach 200 episodes. I think we all deserve it as a society.”
